Certification provides an objective standard for evaluating a professional`s skill at using the Shainin strategies and techniques. Leadership certification addresses project selection, project sponsorship and cultural change. Technical certification addresses strategy development, strategy execution and communication.
Coaching: An Essential Part of Certification
Hands-on experience in a real work environment is a critical part of the Shainin certification program. This ensures that the student works on real life problems and that the results bring value to the client organization. Students must work under the guidance of a qualified coach, either a certified Red X Master employed by the client organization or a Shainin consultant. Coaching is critical for developing the skills necessary to solve tough problems or effectively sponsor projects.
Rolling Top 5® Leader
A Rolling Top 5® Leader has the expertise to guide an organization in identifying and solving complex problems quickly and efficiently. Rolling Top 5® Leaders are able to evaluate diverse business metrics to identify the most critical problems and greatest opportunities within an organization and then allocate the right resources to the high priority projects. Rolling Top 5® Leaders also have the skills necessary to properly sponsor those projects to ensure they are completed swiftly, and then leverage the results across the entire organization for maximum impact.
Red X Apprentice
A Red X Apprentice is a problem solver capable of completing projects with the guidance of a Red X Master or Shainin coach. A Red X Apprentice can successfully apply the fundamental problem-solving tools once the problem-solving strategy has been established.
To earn certification, the candidate must attend the Red X Problem Solving Apprentice class and complete one project as a team leader or team member. Apprentice certification is not intended to be a stopping point in development, but rather is recognition of progress towards Journeyman certification.
Red X Journeyman
A Red X Journeyman is a skilled technical problem solver. Journeyman development builds upon the knowledge and skills from the Apprentice project. A Journeyman has been recognized for demonstrating the ability to develop strategy; execute strategy with discipline; and communicate results effectively.
To earn certification, the candidate must first be a certified Red X Apprentice. After this, the candidate must attend the Red X Problem Solving: Journeyman class, and lead a successful technical project with the support of a Shainin coach or certified Red X Master.
Red X Reliability Engineer
A Red X Reliability Engineer is skilled at solving field failures where the parts have been exposed to environmental and system operating energies. Reliability failures involve the application of energy and are often caused by higher order interactions. A Red X Reliability Engineer has demonstrated the ability to discover these energies, recreate the failure mode and develop a solution.
To earn certification, the candidate must first be a certified Red X Apprentice. Then, the candidate must attend the Red X Problem Solving Reliability class and complete one reliability project as the team leader with the support of a Shainin coach or a certified Red X Master. The project must involve an event discovered in the field.
Red X Master
A Red X Master is an expert, technical problem solver qualified to develop and coach Red X Apprentice, Journeyman, and Reliability candidates. A Red X Master has been recognized for demonstrating the ability to develop, execute, and communicate strategy across the full range of problems (Feature, Properties, Defects, Malfunction and Destructive Events). A Red X Master has also demonstrated the ability to coach and develop others.
To earn certification, the candidate must lead a minimum of three Red X projects beyond Journeyman or Reliability certification. A candidate’s complete body of project work must utilize all five problem solving strategies (Features, Properties, Defects, Malfunction and Destructive Events). After completing the Red X Toolbox requirements, the candidate must attend the Red X Problem Solving Master class, coach at least two individuals to Red X Apprentice certification, and coach two individuals to Red X Journeyman or Reliability certification. During the mentoring process, a Shainin coach will observe onsite a minimum of two visits to provide feedback and to support the candidate’s development. Lastly, the candidate will participate in an interview by a Shainin coach to assess the candidate’s proficiency and to endorse the candidate as a Red X Master.
Red X Technician
A Red X Technician is a specialized problem solver trained in a set of Shainin tools relevant to shop floor problems in specific technologies, e.g., fabrication, or assembly. A Red X Technician can solve problems where the Red X is contained within the local manufacturing system. A Red X Technician can successfully apply fundamental problem-solving tools and may assist Red X Journeyman on the execution of techniques to support their projects, e.g., Isoplot®, Multi-Vari, and Component Search™.
