3 – 4 days of class time. Followed by hands-on coaching. Candidates are only a few days away from work.
ROI As trainees solve actual problems the ROI is immediately seen.
Multiple levels of certification: (Red X Apprentice , Red X Journeyman, Red X Master) Step-by-step learning.
One standard (same classes) worldwide. Clients can deploy our methodology globally in 5 different languages (English, German, French, Spanish and Chinese).
Experiencing the method on real problems / learning by doing / hands-on. Generates a problem solving culture across an organization.
Immediate ROI for class and coaching.
Real life experience.

Red X Problem Solving – Part I (3 Days)

Students attending class will learn in small groups through highly interactive exercises and workshops. The class introduces the Shainin Red X problem solving methodology including fundamental concepts and principles.

Students learn to analyze the structure of various product and manufacturing systems to develop problem solving strategies for product performance, end of line rejects and first pass yield. These strategies can be applied to problems involving: product performance, dimensions, material properties, or manufacturing defects.

Participants will also gain skills and knowledge to:

  • Solve problems quickly and efficiently in manufacturing and engineering.
  • Apply tools and techniques to improve their everyday job functions and tasks.
  • Find true root cause and fix the problem rather than deploying a work-around.

Prerequisites: Projects selected and approved by leadership; and a coaching cadence established.

This class is offered as either a client sponsored class or a Shainin sponsored class. Client sponsored classes, held at the client site, provide an opportunity for discussions focused on the client’s products and technologies. Shainin sponsored classes, held at a central location, provide an opportunity to network and compare notes with problem solvers from other industries.

Red X Problem Solving – Part 2 (4 Days)

The Advanced class builds on the skills developed through the Red X Problem Solving – Part I class to address more challenging problems and to complete the understanding of the Shainin Red X problem solving methodology.

Students will learn to apply Shainin’s disciplined approach to solve more complex manufacturing and engineering problems. Case studies highlight Shainin strategies and techniques to: isolate the source operation within a complex manufacturing process, attack destructive event problems, solve more difficult product performance problems, confirm the Red X, develop realistic tolerances and apply designed experiments.

Participants will use the skills and knowledge gained in this course to:

  • Solve complex problems quickly and efficiently.
  • Apply additional tools and techniques to improve their everyday job functions and tasks.
  • Find true root cause and fix the problem rather than deploying a work-around.

Prerequisites: Completion of the Red X Problem Solving – Part I class. Projects selected and approved by leadership and a coaching cadence established. Students will benefit from having applied some of the strategies they learned in the Red X Problem Solving – Part I class prior to attending this course.

This class is offered as either a client sponsored class or a Shainin sponsored class. Client sponsored classes, held at the client site, provide an opportunity for discussions focused on the s products and technologies. Red X Problem Solving – Reliability (2 Days)

The Reliability class builds on the skills developed through the Advanced Red X Strategies for Problem Solving class to address complex field problems and “No Trouble Found” problems.

Students will learn to apply Shainin’s disciplined approach to solve field failures starting with identifying if the failure is infant mortality, random or wear out. From there, students will learn application of strength, energy and decay strategies. Application of accelerated testing techniques along with understanding fatigue failures will be taught. Chain of events diagrams will be introduced for the first time to help reproduce failures, develop accelerated testing and identify potential corrective actions. Lastly, student will learn how to address the six causes of “No Trouble Found.”

Participants will use the skills and knowledge gained in this course to:

  • Solve complex field problems.
  • Apply strength, energy and decay strategies.
  • Implement accelerated testing techniques.
  • Understand fatigue failures.
  • Leverage chain of events diagrams.
  • Address “No Trouble Found”.

Prerequisites: Completion of the Advanced Red X Strategies for Problem Solving class. Reliability projects selected and approved by leadership and a coaching cadence established. Students will benefit from having applied some of the strategies they learned in the Advanced Red X Strategies for Problem Solving class prior to attending this course.

This class is offered as either a client sponsored class or a Shainin sponsored class. Client sponsored classes, held at the client site, provide an opportunity for discussions focused on the client’s products and technologies. Red X Master – (3 Days)

This highly interactive course teaches master candidates to coach. Case studies illustrate common mistakes and teach master candidates to recognize weak strategies, develop effective strategies and communicate both strategy and proper tool usage. They also learn the soft skills necessary to coach effectively.

Participants will be able to:

  • Develop advanced tactics and strategies to solve the toughest technical problems.
  • Identify common mistakes that teams make and how to adjust their approach to solve problems faster.
  • Recognize the subtle strategy refinements that help teams solve problems faster.
  • Coach others in developing, executing and communicating investigative strategy.

Prerequisites: This class is only available to experienced problem solvers who have demonstrated proficiency with applying the Shainin Red X methodology in a variety of circumstances and manufacturing technologies. Students’ managers are expected to support their development as an internal Shainin coach.
